The National Writers Union joins with the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) in condemning the brutal murder of Faiz Mohammad Khan Sasolion June 27.
A correspondent for the daily Aaj Kal and the Independent News of Pakistan, and the former Presdient of the Khuzdar Press Club, Faizwas killed instantly when assassins opened fire on his car as he drove near the Faisal Hotel. His killers are still at large.
Faiz was only 27 and had been a journalist for 10 years. He recieved death threats recently and had survived two previous attempts on his life. The main source of income for his family of four brothers, two sisters and elderly parents, Faiz was to be married this month.
Faiz is the third journalist to be murdered in Baluchistan during the past two years of armed conflict. Haji Wasi Ahmed, a journalist for the daily Azadi was killed in Khuzdar. Dr. Chisti Mujahid, working for the weekly Akhbar-i-Jahan was killed in Quetta in 2008.
The PFUJ says that conditions for media workers are very dangerous and that journalists are forced to work without any protection or life insurance. They are demanding that the government of Baluchistan appoint a High Court judge to conduct an inquiry into the murder of Faiz and bring the killers to justice. They are also demanding, that the federal and provincial governments compensate the breaved family.
The NWU and PFUJ are both members of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), which aims to push governments to promote social justice and rights for journalists.
