We Now Offer Health Insurance to Our Members

Effective immediately, the National Writers Union is offering our members a chance to buy quality health insurance. This program offers the most comprehensive health insurance package available to individual freelance writers in the U.S.

The new program provides access for members to the best available individual major medical insurance coverage in each of the 50 states.  It includes access to short-term major medical insurance, limited medical insurance, telephonic medicine and a free Union Plus prescription discount card.  Members who employ one or more people in addition to themselves will also be able to purchase group insurance in several states.  Many of the programs are underwritten, meaning not all members will be able to purchase the coverage.

The new health insurance options are available through the NWU web site (www.nwu.org) and through a conversation with a broker licensed to do business in each state. This is not a group health insurance plan.  Unfortunately, we were unable to locate any insurance company or broker willing and able to cover us with a group plan.  Given that, we believe we have obtained the best coverage currently available to our members.

We know that health insurance is one of the most important protections a person can have and we are all committed to making the program work for our members.  We will continue to follow every lead and pursue every opening in an effort to assure our members the best health insurance for freelance writers.  And we will redouble our work to win universal single payer health care for all.

We especially want to thank First Vice President Ann Hoffman who has worked tirelessly to get us to this point after many years of effort by NWU.

Members and potential members can check out the possibilities now at www.nwu.org.
